Community School Resources
Community Schools at Janet Kahn School of Integrated Arts
Community schools bring students, staff, families, and community members together to shape a shared future and strengthen connections with the broader community. At Janet Kahn School of Integrated Arts, our Community School Council, led by our Community School Coordinator, Ms. Willa Correia-Kuehn, oversees this collaborative effort. The council—comprising students, staff, families, and community members—engages in inclusive decision-making to identify the needs of both the school and the community, developing a unified vision for success.
Our approach follows a continuous improvement cycle that begins with assessing needs and planning, moves through implementation and development, builds supportive infrastructure, and focuses on achieving measurable impacts and outcomes. This cycle then repeats, ensuring ongoing progress and adaptability.
The six pillars of a community school are:
-
Collaborative leadership, shared power, and voice
-
Expanded, enriched learning opportunities
-
Rigorous, community-connected classroom instruction
-
A culture of belonging, safety, and care
-
Integrated systems of support
-
Powerful student and family engagement
The ultimate goal of community schools is for all students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally in vibrant, supportive school communities.
The Community School Council is actively working on:
-
Planning a Wellness Fair: January 15, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
-
Starting a school store: Students can earn points to shop for items.
-
Conducting a needs assessment: Identifying priorities for the school and community.
-
Supporting after-school activities
-
And more exciting initiatives!
