Unless it is an emergency, all students must present a pass from a teacher or staff member to be seen in the Health Office. If a student presents without a pass and it is not an emergency, the student will be sent back to class to obtain a pass before the student will be seen. This is a safety issue for all students, so please reinforce this procedure with your child.
Please remind your child to report to the Health Office with a pass from a teacher or duty personnel if they are not feeling well or have been injured. The school nurse or health assistant must be consulted regarding the condition of a student before a determination can be made about the student going home.
If your child is ill or injured and cannot fully participate in school activities, please have your child's doctor write a note stating why your child cannot participate and the anticipated time of non-participation. Please provide this note to the Health Office.
NASN, the National Association for School Nurses, has stated that more than 6 visits to the Health Office in a school year is excessive and requires further investigation. While it is important for your child to know that they are free to visit the nurse with any health issues, it is also important for them to have an uninterrupted education and remain in class as much as possible. If your student has more than 6 visits to the Health Office during the school year, we will be contacting the parents to discuss other options.
Any medication that will be administered at school requires a doctor's order for prescription medication or parent authorization if over the counter medication. This is discussed in greater detail under the medication policy.
If your child is not feeling well in the morning prior to school, we ask that you keep your child home rather than instructing them to come see the nurse. The Health Office has limited treatment options, and often our only treatment is to contact the parent and have the student picked up. If the student is kept home rather than sent to school, parents will not be called out of work for a sick student and the student will not be exposing his/her classmates to the illness. Please refer to sick day guidelines for additional information.
